This feature should also have a quantity of items coming in so you can not over sell an item. Currently your quantity can only be set to zero and then the customer can order as many as they want as there is not set limits. Problem is though if you are dealing with limited edition items and only have 50 items coming in your customer could still back order 100. There needs to be a way to set the amount you have coming back into stock.
Ability to actually place an order with product release date set in the future. At this time in version 220.127.116.11 it is impossible.
The merchant can sell an item as a Pre-order and thus capture the order and demand ahead of time. A special status of pre-ordered will go to the Order status or a custom status to a specific product release name to organise them for when the orders arrive.
Backorder / Preorder module does not let merchant sell in a future date and also does not allow quantity to be set, so 1 million items could be purchased when only 500 are coming in...

Any update on this? It would be a great feature.

Have the option of ordering a pre-order items or not in stock item. Allowing that item to be held or reserved by the customer leaving a certain dollar deposits (maybe a button the say "reserve yours today"). This way the customer could reserve an item for a future release and then pay the balance left when in.

Allow Customers to Pre-Order Items that are coming soon and also allow Customers to Purchase out of stock items that are on BackOrder.

With some highly priced items a deposit maybe required to procure this item. An example would be a $1,000 item with a $150 deposit. The deposit would hold the item for 7 days, at which time full payment should be made or the product is released back to the site, for sale again.
These large items, may need deposits, because customers intend to pick the up directly from the seller, but may not have the full amount to purchase the item until the following pay day. This also allows some customers to pay cash directly to the seller at pickup. The deposit also reassures the customer that they will be able to pickup the item and not lose it to another customer, especially if the item in question is a one off, unique, product. Custom rims for a car or a boat, etc.
QT just released X-Notification. It could be a few extra features to this module as following:
- Coming soon (based on a new field in product page "available since")
X-Cart never had backordering functionality.
According to Marshall Gatten's comment, I can imagine only one reason why they've taken out this mod from the newer versions, and this is that this way a third party company can sell it now for money.... I fear this mod will never be added again for free......

X-Cart actually created this mod for me on version 3.something.
It was excellent. An order that contained some backorder items and some currently available items would be automatically split into two orders. As a company we decided to stop taking orders on out-of-stock items, so when we recently upgraded to the latest version we left the backordering mod behind. But the point is that they've already got most of the code in-hand if they just remember where to look for it.

Backorder along with individual tracking numbers for each item ordered. Backorder status should be set by variants if necessary and allow for a back in stock date that would be shown on the customer order side. Need to have additional order statuses - backorder, partial shipment and emails for those statuses.

add a 'flag' to products, "Available for BackOrder", if ticked, text in product details changes to advise that it will be a backorder, and add to cart as normal, perhaps with extra text like product options indicating it's a backorder.
If not ticked, it's not available for back order.
As product qty will decrease below zeor, this will also indicate how many of the item need to be ordered to fulfil backorders.

That will be very usefull!

It would be nice to be able to differentiate between an item that is coming back in stock (can be backordered) and one that is not, with the option to automatically turn off products/variants that are not coming back in to stock once they reach zero quantity.
